Singer, Festival Curator & Cultural Scientist/Activist
Jamila Al-Yousef (29) is a singer, festival curator, and cultural scientist/activist from Berlin. Inspired by her Palestinian father who came to Germany as a refugee, she early started creating transcultural projects to share diverse perspectives on the Middle East, North Africa and postmigrant topics. Amonst other things she established the yearly "Arab* Underground" program at Fusion Festival, built up the "Welcome Board" for the Lower Saxon Ministry of Arts and Science - an initiative supporting refugee musicians - and managed the talent campus during the first Pop-Kultur Festival at Berghain in 2015. She also created the BERLiSTANBUL#25 underground festival in both cultural metropolises, and worked for ‪Bukahara‬, Maxim Gorki Theatre, Sasha Waltz and the international cultural policy conference ICCPR. For the Berlin nightlife conference Stadt "Nach Acht" Jamila conceptualized the "Rave Diplomacy Backstage" network meeting for musicians from the MENA region, invited by Goethe-Institut, and players of the Berlin music industry. Moreover she tours with her band "Jamila & The Other Heroes" and currently finishes her debut album „Sit el Kon.
‎ست الكون “(The Grandmother of the Universe), with a grant by Initiative Musik. Jamila also is MENA-consultant for Piranha Arts and went as Berlin music ambassador to the Palestine Music Expo in 2018 and 2019. She has been part of art funding boards in Lower Saxony and Berlin. Since 2018 Jamila is part of the jury of the international Martin Roth initiative, a program to ensure the safety of artists in danger.
In 2019 Jamila started working as a consultant for various cultural institutions, artistic groups and as a teacher at University Hildesheim in the field of racism critical cultural work.
